Newquay Conservation Area

Newquay Conservation Area. This is a new group formed to propose the creation of a conservation zone in central Newquay. The area will be based on a map of Newquay from around 1917 and other buildings of interest from later dates outside this zone. At the moment the only conservation area within Newquay is around the historic church at St Columb Minor.

Newquay Museum has kindly agreed to host the groups information and continuing updates on its website at www.newquaymuseum.org/nca

Over the past thirty years Newquay has witnessed substantial redevelopment, much of which has not been sympathetic to the town’s unique heritage. Areas like Bank Street and Fore Street have seen modern developments that overshadow the traditional architecture. Historic shopfronts and buildings have been altered or replaced eroding the character that once made these streets central to Newquay’s identity. Similarly, smaller but historically significant locations such as Chapel Hill, Deer Park and Sydney Road with their traditional cottages and early residential buildings have faced similar pressures, leaving these areas vulnerable to further unsympathetic changes.

These locations should be prioritised for inclusion within a conservation area to prevent further damage from redevelopment. Their preservation is vital in maintaining Newquay’s architectural and cultural identity, allowing the town to retain its sense of place amidst ongoing detrimental changes. By including these streets in a conservation area, we can ensure that future development respects the historical significance of these sites.
