The Newquay Museum Group first meeting at our new venue for monthly meetings in the Great Western Hotel was on 18th September 2024 and Newquay Museum thank the hotel owners, Cornish company St Austell Brewery, and their hotel management for their support. These meetings are now being headed up as Newquay Museum Group thereby encompassing the other organisations in partnership with the museum's founder Newquay Old Cornwall Society. The Newquay Old Cornwall Society, also runs the Newquay Old Cornwall Archaeological Group, and has an incredible archive collection of Newquay images and wider collection. It has been joined by Kowethas Ertach Kernow who run a Cornish Gallery Lounge and museum shop (Towan Vintage) where meetings and activities take place. The St Mawgan History Group archive has been merged with the NOCS archive but separately identifiable on the database and are holding their events at St Mawgan Village Hall.
Other groups who use the museum for meetings and activities are Celtic Nation Kernow and Newquay St Piran's Festival Group.
Thank you to Louis Turner for a most interesting illustrated talk covering the history of Cornish tourism from the earliest of time. Looking at visitors who recorded their tours around Cornwall from Celia Fiennes in 1698 and then through to tourism in the 21st century and the growth through the railways and its later road connections.
There was a good turnout at our inaugural event at the Great Western Hotel of around forty members and guests. A big thank you to the hotel staff who were really very supportive in preparing the room with Baner Sen Peren bunting and laying out chairs, which were very comfortable.
We look forward to 23rd October and Dr Merv Davey giving a talk on ‘Milva Kernow’ A Cornish Bestiary – From the horse skull ‘Penglaze’ to the Beast of Bodmin. Click HERE for the poster and details.
